Regional Comedy Theater from Yucatan
''Death by Fermentation''

Script: Concepción Mora
Director: Prof. Raúl Niño
'Death by Fermentation', is a regional theater play that rescues the traditions of some Yucatan townships where the 'po´kebam' ceremony is still in use. In this ceremony, the dead are bathed and the food for the adults attending the wake is prepared with the bath water in order to distribute the sins of the deceased among them, thus granting him a pure, sinless eternal rest.
Chona has been left a widow with two children. Her husband died after eating a cake in a drunken state and it fermented during sleep. This unfortunate incident causes a series of confusions and muddles that will finally lead to a surprising ending.
Full of the anecdotes and superstitions of the Mayan people and very much in keeping with regional theater, full of idioms, mischief and humor, we will bring this tradition to the audience without losing the essence of the celebration of the Day of the dead.
The Magia Escénica theater company is made up of a group of professional actors looking to promote the traditions of the people from the Yucatan and preserve them for future generations through art. The cast in order of appearance: Claudia Cámara (Chona), Jorge Can (Chinto), Norma Rodríguez (Rosana), Karminia Pérez (Tania), Marpy Jiménez (Carmela), Alberto Torres (Rach), Amir Navarrete (deceased), Paula Quintal (grandmother), Jorge Chable (Death) and Alicia Garcia (mestiza).
Professor Raúl Niño has had a long career in theater and has been a part of important plays presented in Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Campeche, Villahermosa and Mexico City, among others. 'Salma Salomé', the role he plays, has opened up many doors that help to preserve and promote regional theater from the Yucatan region.
