Family portrait ''20 VAROS''

The skeletons get together for the picture
According to Mexican lore, skeletons come out of their tombs on the Day of the Dead to delight in all the goodies they enjoyed in life, and their families have left for them as an offering: delicious dishes, fruits, candy, cigarettes, and liquor. In this context, Grupo Veinte Varos presents the story of a typical Mexican family where all members have passed away and only have the chance to get together once a year on November 2nd. For the occasion, the family artist, Arnoldo Pérez y Pérez y Pérez takes the opportunity to bring them all together and organize the souvenir family portrait. As the skeletons come out of their graves, Arnoldo starts telling us the circumstances in which each one died; when he finally gets all of them together, he flashes the camera and the party gets started.
In this street theater show, inspired by the etchings of José Guadalupe Posada and the miniature skeletons of Mexican handcrafts, the audience will see a parade of characters such as la Catrina*, the revolutionary hero on a horse, the bride and groom figurines for the cake and the pulque servers**, all of them in full festivities, celebrating death.
Grupo Veinte Varos is an independent and multidisciplinary Stage show Creation Center in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, made up of a group of artists from different regions of Mexico and all over the world with the purpose of creating spaces for artistic training and publicizing and promoting cultural events in the region which makes it possible to discover and strengthen a unique and distinctive cultural identity.
