Theater with Puppets
''Canek, the legend of a Mayan hero'' GRUPO LUNA MORENA

Large Format Puppets bring Canek to life
'Puppets are a very comprehensive means of communication that call us to reason, motivate the heart and make the spirit vibrate through the senses'.
The large format puppet show, Canek, the legend of a Mayan hero, is presented by the experimental theater workshop group Luna Morena and Guadalajara University. The story develops through the friendship between Guy, a child descended from Yucatan landowners, and Jacinto Canek, a young indigenous character who ends up rebelling against the landowners in search of justice for his people.
The play is based on the true story of Jacinto Uc de los Santos, born in Campeche in 1730, better known as Jacinto Canek, which in Mayan means ''black snake''. The story analyzes his motives for leading the rebellion in 1761 and we are called to reflect about the social injustice indigenous communities go through in our country. The poetry of Yucatan play-write Ermilo Abreu is woven into the plot.
The experimental puppet group Luna Morena was created in 2001 in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Among the plays that stand out we must mention: Uncouth Tarot or Lout Bingo, a Hamper full of stories, Zaicocirco and Shadows, Dream within a dream. Luna Morena has participated in important national and international festivals such as the WAC Fest in China, the Capitol Finge in Washington, D.C., the International Puppet Festival of Prague, the Faces of the World Festival in Los Angeles, California and the International Puppet Arts Festival in Quebec, Canada, among others.
